- The Railway Inn -
History
Of Tudor wattle and daub construction the Tavern has the
distinction of being the most recent pub in the oldest building being used
for the drinks trade in Penkridge. It opened for the business of the
hundreds of Irish “navvies” who built the Grand Junction Railway in about
1835. The strong hostility between local men and the navvies led to
constant fighting which resulted in the navvies being banned from all the
other pubs in the district. It became the “local” for farm workers from
the southern side of the village and got much of its trade from its
farmers’ auctions called the Railway Smithfield.
Open: 12-11 Monday to Sunday
Beer range: Carlsberg, Carling, Fosters, Tetley,
